About the compound
Glutathione (1500mg) — Research Compound
Glutathione (γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine, GSH) is a tripeptide and the most abundant endogenous antioxidant in mammalian cells, present at concentrations of 1-10mM in most cell types. It serves as the primary intracellular redox buffer, a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes, and a key regulator of cellular thiol homeostasis. Glutathione in its reduced form (GSH) is the research-relevant active form, converting to the oxidised disulphide GSSG following radical scavenging.
Biological Functions and Research Applications
Glutathione’s research applications span multiple biological domains:
- Oxidative stress research: GSH/GSSG ratio is a primary indicator of cellular redox status in in vitro and in vivo models. GSH depletion models (BSO treatment, acetaminophen hepatotoxicity) and GSH supplementation experiments are fundamental tools in oxidative stress biology.
- Detoxification research: Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) catalyse GSH conjugation to electrophilic xenobiotics for elimination. GSH is essential for hepatic detoxification of reactive metabolites, making it central to pharmacokinetic and toxicology research.
- Immune function: Lymphocyte proliferation, NK cell cytotoxicity, and antigen presentation are all redox-sensitive processes with documented GSH dependence in research models.
- Melanogenesis research: GSH competes with tyrosine for tyrosinase binding, shifting melanogenesis toward phaeomelanin (light pigment) — a mechanism studied in pigmentation biology.
